Students to perform mock disaster drills in Palatine

Harper College's first Community Emergency Response Training team students will put their know-how to the test at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, with a series of mock disaster scenarios.

During the drill, which will serve as a final exam, they'll fight a live fire, assess and treat injured patients, remove a steel plate from a victim and conduct a systematic search and rescue.

"It's important for everyone to show they can take what they've learned and put it into action," said Ed Kemper, volunteer coordinator with the Palatine Emergency Management Agency.

Harper partnered with the Palatine Fire Department to offer the seven-session course, which is designed to help residents protect themselves, their families and their neighbors in emergency and disaster situations. Due to its popularity, the CERT class will be offered again later in the spring through Harper Continuing Education.
