City law says Uber can't operate in Bloomington-Normal

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - Attorneys for the city of Bloomington say the ride-booking service Uber doesn't comply with rules in Bloomington and Normal and Uber drivers are subject to fines.

Uber launched service in Bloomington and Normal on Sunday along with four other new Illinois cities. The Pantagraph reports (http://bit.ly/1Ju9fBS ) Bloomington city attorney George Boyle told Uber general manager Chris Taylor this week that Uber can't operate, citing a municipal ordinance.

City officials say they will work to make changes to code that would allow Uber and similar services. In the meantime, Uber drivers are subject to fines of $250 or more.

Taylor cited a state law regulating services like Uber, but the law isn't effective until June. Uber said in response that it didn't have any new information regarding conversations with Bloomington.
