Two ex-newspapermen apply for Batavia council vacancy

Two people with backgrounds in newspapers will be interviewed Tuesday for the 5th Ward vacancy on the Batavia City Council.

Kevin Botterman and Mark Foster applied for the job.

Foster is a former newspaperman, having worked for 21 years for The Kane County Chronicle and its predecessors. He also wrote, as an independent contractor, for three years for the Daily Herald. Since 2004, he has been a shipping manager for Worldwide Militaria of Glendale Heights, according to the resume he submitted. He lives on the 200 block of Webster Street.

Botterman was the campaign co-manager for Steve Vasilion, the alderman who resigned in January. According to his letter of application, Botterman is a full-time substitute teacher at Rotolo Middle School in Batavia, and formerly was a reporter for the Chicago Tribune. He served on the Arlington Heights Youth Commission, the Hampshire Zoning Board of Appeals, and as a Hampshire Township trustee. He lives on the 200 block of Stone Manor Circle.

The council, meeting as a committee, will interview the two men at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave. It will then meet behind closed doors to discuss the matter, and then announce its choice. Technically, it is the privilege of the mayor to appoint a replacement, but Mayor Jeff Schielke prefers to have the council involved in the matter, he has said, because they have to work with the new person.

The appointee will serve until April 2017.
