March 13: Broadway's Next H!T musical comes to CLC

A madcap mix of improvisation, comedy and Broadway show tunes is in store for audiences of "Broadway's Next H!T Musical," coming to the College of Lake County at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 13. This one-of-a-kind show features a hilarious team of master improvisers from New York who gather made-up, hit song suggestions from the audience and then turn them into an unscripted theatrical awards show and full-blown improvised musical.

When audiences arrive at the theater, they are invited to write down made-up song titles on slips of paper and drop them in a giant fishbowl. Four master thespians take turns coming to the stage and drawing song titles from the bowl. They take the titles and turn them into full blown improvised songs, fighting tooth and nail against each other to win the grand prize of the evening: the Phony Award. Then the audience votes for their favorite song and watches the cast turn it into a full blown improvised musical during the second half, complete with memorable characters, witty dialogue and plot twists galore.

The show has been seen recently at The Triad, Tribeca Film Festival and at the New York Musical Theater Festival, among many others. Under the direction of improv veterans Rob Schiffmann and Deb Rabbai, TheaterWeek hailed the show as "brilliant" and The New York Post called Broadway's Next H!T Musical "remarkable."

Schiffmann has worked and toured as a professional improviser and musician for over 17 years. He is a two-time MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs) Award winner and received the 2011 INNY (Improvisation News) Award for Best Improv Coach. Schiffmann worked with Chicago City Limits as a performer, teacher and director from 1994 to 2011.

Rabbai is a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and a highly experienced teacher of improvisation and acting. She spent ten years performing and teaching improvisation with Freestyle Repertory Theatre, five years performing with ComedySportz NY and six years performing with Chicago City Limits. She has appeared on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and in national commercials.
