Clean jobs bill proposes bump in renewable energy purchase

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Lawmakers want to increase the share of clean energy purchased in Illinois with a bill they say will bring jobs to the state.

The clean jobs bill also establishes a strategy for reducing carbon pollution from Illinois power plants. It would bring Illinois in line with new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards.

Proponents announced the measure Thursday. They say the bill creates jobs by promoting the use of clean energy sources, such as wind and solar.

State Rep. Elaine Nekritz says the bill "sets Illinois energy policy" and calls for increasing state renewable energy standards to 35 percent by 2030. The current standard is 20 percent by 2025.

The Democrat from Northbrook says the change will bring 32,000 jobs to Illinois after standards are implemented.
