Medical organization opens new Rosemont headquarters Saturday

A former golf driving range in Rosemont is now home to the national headquarters of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, where officials this weekend will be cutting the ribbon on their new building.

Construction of the 5-story, 180,000-square foot office building on the northwest corner of Higgins and River roads started in July 2013 and wrapped up late last year. The academy was able to move to its new digs during the first weekend of December, relocating down the block from their old headquarters at 6300 N. River Road.

Academy President Frederick Azar, Mayor Brad Stephens and representatives from the headquarters' four other equity partners - Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons, and Orthopaedic Learning Center - will cut the ribbon at 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by a tour of the building.

The village of Rosemont bought the academy's old office building for nearly $4.7 million in December, and officials plan to hold onto it while they talk with a potential buyer.

Meanwhile, construction continues on a 155-room Hampton Suites hotel and 600-space parking garage next to the academy's new building, targeted for completion this year.
