Volunteers at North Central prepare food for hungry

In a gym more accustomed to track meets, thousands of volunteers held a pack meet Sunday. Naperville-based Feed The Need!, a local coalition of churches, businesses and civic organizations filled North Central College's Residence Hall/Recreation Center. More than 4,000 volunteers prepared packages of food containing nearly 800,000 meals for hungry children around the world, including about 270,000 meals for Ebola-stricken countries in Africa. Suburban Russians enjoy old-world Winter Festival

Hundreds of people from all over the Chicago suburbs came to Des Plaines on Sunday afternoon to enjoy Russian food, music and culture. The sixth annual Winter Festival, held at Holy Virgin Protection Russian Orthodox Cathedral, 1800 Lee St. in Des Plaines, was like the Russian version of Mardi Gras, said coordinator Gordana Trbuhovich. No age limit on fun in St. Charles

Sunday's Fireside Fun event at the Durant House Museum showed that history has no age limit. In one room of the preserved 1843 farmhouse museum in the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W700 Dean St. in St. Charles, an 81-year-old volunteer worked with a 6-year-old visitor making bracelets out of buttons by the fireplace. In another room, a 9-year-old volunteer taught adults the centuries-old game of skittles by window light. Full story.

Former Mt. Prospect pastor leaves rich legacy

A memorial service for a popular Mount Prospect pastor will be held Feb. 28 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church. The Rev. Lloyd Heroff served St. Mark's from 2000 until his retirement in 2010, as an interim pastor, associate and finally senior pastor. Colleagues say his warm and genuine manner helped unite the congregation during difficult transitions in pastoral leadership. Full story.

No. 5 Wisconsin beats Illinois 68-49

Frank Kaminsky scored 23 points, Bronson Koenig added 15, and No. 5 Wisconsin beat Illinois 68-49 on Sunday. Nigel Hayes had 14 points for the Badgers, who are now off to their best start in school history at 23-2. Wisconsin leads the Big Ten at 11-1 in conference play. Sharp lifts Blackhawks to 2-1 shootout win over Penguins

Patrick Sharp scored the decisive goal in the shootout, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 on Sunday. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane also scored in the tiebreaker as the Blackhawks earned their second straight win.
