Hoffman Estates swears in new police chief

Acting Police Chief Ted Bos, a 30-year veteran of Hoffman Estates' police department, was sworn in as its new permanent chief at Monday night's village board meeting.

Bos succeeds Michael Hish, who retired from the department in September.

"I am honored by the appointment to the position of chief of police by the village of Hoffman Estates," Bos said in a news release. "I am enthusiastic about leading a great team of people and will continue to bring the best police services to the community."

Village Manager James Norris named Bos acting police chief immediately after Hish's retirement, then promoted him to the permanent position this month.

"Ted's 30 years of experience with the Hoffman Estates Police Department when combined with his strong leadership skills and his personal commitment to public service makes him the best choice to lead our police department into the future," Norris said.

Mayor Bill McLeod also added his praise for Bos' long service to the village.

"Ted has been a critical member of the Hoffman Estates Police Department for three decades, serving many of those years in positions that require strong leadership skills and capabilities," McLeod said. "He has been a valuable asset to the village and we look forward to working with him in his new position as police chief."

Bos grew up in Chicago and said he always wanted to be a police officer. He joined the Hoffman Estates department in January 1985.

He was promoted to sergeant in 1997, serving as a supervisor in the patrol, tactical and investigations divisions, then named a lieutenant in 2002. He served as Investigations Division commander from 2003 to 2011. Bos became assistant chief in 2011.

With Bos' promotion, three other department administrators are also moving up in rank. Gregory Poulos will be appointed assistant chief, Mike Raucci will be promoted to lieutenant and Brian Petersen will be promoted to sergeant.
