Free gun locks offered in Vernon Hills

The Vernon Hills Police Department is offering free cable gun locks that can be used on many types of weapons, including revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Two locks per resident are available. They can be picked up weekdays, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the police department's records section, 740 Lakeview Parkway. To arrange another time, call (847) 247-4889. Identification is not required and those who request the locks will not be questioned regarding their residency. The village in 1998 made it unlawful for parents, guardians or anyone 18 and older to allow minors to come into unsupervised possession of a weapons. It also requires that all firearms sold, transferred or possessed in the village have installed a protective trigger lock.
