WIU defensive coordinator to leave for Bowling Green

MACOMB, Ill. (AP) - An assistant football coach at Western Illinois University has resigned for a new position.

Brian Ward was defensive coordinator for the Leathernecks for three years. He will take the same post at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Head coach Bob Nielson thanked Ward for his hard work and "helping move the Leatherneck football program forward."

Ward joined Western in spring 2012. The school says he built one of the best defenses in the Missouri Valley Conference and in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision.

During Ward's time at the school, five different Leathernecks earned All-MVFC defensive honors - three in multiple years.

Last year, Western finished 28th nationally in rushing defense - allowing just 139 yards per game.
