Galesburg man sentenced to 40 years for 15-year-old's death

GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) - A Galesburg man accused of shooting a 15-year-old to death in 2013 has pleaded guilty.

The (Galesburg) Register-Mail reports that (http://bit.ly/1DkFRbT ) 19-year-old Brandon Kenney entered the plea Wednesday to a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Javon Butler.

Judge Scott Shipplett gave Kenney a 40-year prison sentence. The sentenced included 15 years for the murder charge and a 25-year add-on for use of a handgun.

Defense attorney Jeremy Karlin says with good behavior credit Kenney could serve 20 years.

Javon Butler's mother said she didn't think that's fair, saying "he's still got half of his life left." Butler's body was found in the backyard of a Knox County home.
