100th day of school at Saint Alphonsus Liguori

Last week kindergarten and first grade students celebrated the 100th day of school at Saint Alphonsus Liguori School in Prospect Heights. Teachers planned exciting cross-curricular activities throughout the day to engage St. Alphonsus' young students.

Kindergarten teacher, Laura Smith, designed a series of math lessons to reinforce the concept of 100.

"We counted to 100 by ones, twos, fives, and tens. We also partnered with the fourth grade students and flipped a penny 100 times and tallied heads whether it landed on heads or tails. Then we rolled a die 100 times and tallied the number it landed on," explained Smith.

Kindergarten students also participated in 100th day activities in physical education where they took 100 steps and did jumping jacks counting by ten. Later, they heard a story about the 100th day of school and enjoyed 100 numeral cookies.

First grade teacher, Maria Perna, also embraced the 100th day celebration by delighting her students with a variety of 100th day activities.

"We had a great time on the 100th day of school," Perna shared.

First grade students wrote their name for 100 seconds, completed a 100th day workout, wrote about what they would do with $100.00, licked a lollipop 100 times

and read stories about the 100th day.

However, showcasing their 100th day posters was the most exciting moment of the first graders' celebration.

Perna explained that each student made a poster with a collection of 100 items, arranged in twos, fives, tens or twenty-fives. Students used household items of their choice to complete their posters, including stickers, cotton balls, pennies and macaroni. Once the posters were complete, students presented them to the class and explained how each collection was arranged.

"Everyone enjoys the 100th day of school," Perna added.
