Friday's Sports In Brief

GOLF

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Tiger Woods is gone from Torrey Pines, and Phil Mickelson joined him Friday by missing the cut.

In a tournament that quickly lost a big chunk of its star power, Harris English played another bogey-free round for a 6-under 66 on the North Course to build a two-shot lead in the Farmers Insurance Open.

English was at 10-under 134, two shots ahead of Nick Watney (65), Jhonattan Vegas (69) and Martin Laird, who had another 68.

Mickelson was done in by his short game. The best he could managed was a 72 on the North Course, and he missed the cut by two shots. It was the first time since 2002 that Mickelson missed the cut in back-to-back weeks on the PGA Tour. It was also the first time, Woods and Mickelson failed to make the cut in the same tournament in consecutive weeks on the PGA Tour.

Justin Rose, at No. 5 the highest-ranked player at Torrey Pines, shot 70 on the North and also missed the cut. So did Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson.

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) - Brittany Lincicome and Sun Young Yoo topped the leaderboard in the wind-swept Bahamas LPGA Classic when second-round play was suspended because of darkness.

In wind gusting to 35-40 mph, Yoo completed a first-round 70 and shot 69 in the second to match Lincicome at 7 under on Atlantis Resort's Ocean Club course. Lincicome was 2 under in the second round with 13 holes left after shooting a 68 in the opening round.

After rain delayed play Thursday, only half of the players were able to finish the second round Friday. In May 2013, the inaugural event was reduced to three 12-hole rounds because of flooding.

Second-ranked Inbee Park, Dori Carter (72), Jenny Shin (71), Kelly Shon (71) were 6 under. Park was 1 under for the round with 13 holes left. Lydia Ko was at 3 under after rounds of 72 and 71.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) - Tom Pernice Jr. closed with a double bogey for a 6-under 66 and a share of the first-round lead in the Allianz Championship with Paul Goydos and Bart Bryant.

Bernhard Langer was a stroke back along with Fred Funk and Tom Byrum. Langer, the reigning player of the year, won the 2010 event and has three other top-three finishes at Broken Sound in the last six years.

Defending champion Michael Allen had a 70, 10 shots higher than his opening round last year. Nolan Henke had a 77 in his Champions Tour debut. The three-time PGA Tour winner turned 50 in November.

SKIING

BEAVER CREEK, Colo. (AP) - Tina Maze of Slovenia captured the women's downhill gold medal at the world championships ahead of prerace favorite Lindsey Vonn, who struggled on her home course.

Maze finished the twisty course in 1 minute, 45.89 seconds to beat Anna Fenninger of Austria by 0.02 seconds. Lara Gut of Switzerland earned bronze. This result was the reverse of the super-G race, when Fenninger won and Maze was runner-up. Maze has a chance to medal in every event at worlds.

Vonn got off to a fast start in the gliding portion, to the delight of the capacity crowd. But she faded in the curvy middle section and wound up fifth. Vonn's worlds aren't over, though, as she said she will compete in the giant slalom and the Alpine combined, which meshes the times of a slalom run and a downhill run.

NBA

NEW YORK (AP) - Chris Paul made it clear: His problem with referee Lauren Holtkamp was with her call. He left it to others to say it wasn't about her gender.

His criticism of the rookie official drew a rebuke from the referees union Friday followed by strong backing from the female executive director of the NBA Players Association.

The Los Angeles Clippers guard criticized Holtkamp on Thursday night after a 105-94 loss at Cleveland, saying she might not be ready for the big leagues after six seasons in the NBA Development League.

Paul was asked about it three times Friday before the Clippers played in Toronto. "Like I said, last night was about a bad call," Paul said. "That's it."

NFL

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The latest dispute between the NFL Players Association and the NFL over the league's personal conduct policy was aired in federal court, as Adrian Peterson listened to arguments about his suspension that the union is trying to have overturned.

"I felt like I got a fair hearing, for once," the Minnesota Vikings running back said to reporters on his way out.

It was more criticism of the disciplinary process that Peterson and the union have derided as arbitrary and unfair since punishment was levied by the NFL after the running back was charged in a child abuse case involving his son. He resolved the case with a plea bargain last year.

Peterson did not speak at the hour-long hearing in front of U.S. District Judge David Doty, who did not provide a timetable for his decision.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Raiders hired Seattle linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. as defensive coordinator on new coach Jack Del Rio's staff.

Del Rio tabbed Norton, his former teammate for two years with the Dallas Cowboys, five days after the Seahawks lost the Super Bowl to New England.

NHL

NEW YORK (AP) - Star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers will miss at least three weeks after being hit in the throat by a shot last weekend.

The Rangers said Lundqvist sustained a vascular injury last Saturday. The team said it is talking to medical experts about his recovery.

Lundqvist was hurt when he was struck by a shot from Carolina's Brad Malone in the second period at Madison Square Garden. The three-time All-Star goalie was knocked backward onto the ice and kicked his legs, and the training staff checked him. Lundqvist stayed in the game and finished with 31 saves as the Rangers won.

The 32-year-old Lundqvist made 33 saves Monday night in a win over Florida. He sat out Wednesday night and backup Cam Talbot played the whole way in a victory over Boston.
