Barrington residents call for food labeling

On Friday, residents from the Barrington and Libertyville areas called on state Sen. Dan Duffy to support legislation that would label all genetically engineered foods - or GMOs - in Illinois.

Working with the advocacy group, Food & Water Watch, residents launched their first event, a call-in day, supporting the bill.

The event generated more than 100 phone calls urging Duffy to support GMO labeling in Illinois, according to organizers. Supporters said that at the heart of the issue is the right of citizens to have basic information about their food and how it's produced.

Over the next several months, the residents are planning to collect petition signatures, host forums and build support among local businesses and organizations.
