Library presents stories of daring slave escapes

Historical novelist Doug Peterson will present "A Thousand Miles to Freedom" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, in the Rasmussen South Room of the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Road in Schaumburg.

Peterson's Underground Railroad stories will include Henry "Box" Brown, who mailed himself to freedom in a wooden box. He also will share the intriguing tale of William and Ellen Craft, who escaped with Ellen posing as a white man, while her husband pretended to be her slave.

Peterson recounts both compelling stories in his books, "The Vanishing Woman" and "The Disappearing Man," which will be available for purchase and signing following his presentation.

Registration is required for this program by visiting the Information Desk on the library's second floor or calling (847) 923-3347.
