'Pennies for Pins' raises money for Mooseheart students

Every lane at the St. Charles Bowl was filled Thursday afternoon with almost 100 students from DaVinci Academy in Elgin and Mooseheart Child City and School.

DaVinci students organized the bowling event, "Pennies for Pins," to raise money for Mooseheart.

Each year Mooseheart students receive a fixed allowance to spend on clothing. Mooseheart Executive Director Gary Urwiler said DaVinci's support is greatly appreciated.

"Any time you have students from one school coming together with those from another, it makes it a win-win situation," Urwiler said.

DaVinci seventh-grader Gabe Kramer, 12, of Batavia, has friends that went to Mooseheart, and said the bowling fundraiser was a great idea. "It makes us feel good and it's great to know that we are making a difference," he said.

Mooseheart's Ethan Davis, 10, was grinning ear to ear and having a blast.

"It feels like they really care about us," he said of the DaVinci students.

Founded in 1913, Mooseheart is supported completely through private donations. It is home to about 200 students ranging in age from preschoolers to high school seniors. Applications are considered from any family whose children are lacking a stable home environment.

DaVinci Academy is an independent school for gifted and academically talented preschool through eighth-grade students serving the Fox Valley region. It opened 15 years ago.
