College of Lake County students spend lunchtime learning self-defense

Several women learned self-defense techniques as part of Wellness Wednesday at College of Lake County, Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills.

Martial arts instructor Scott Gave presented a demonstration of verbal and physical techniques that people can use to protect themselves during situations of possible violence - whether from strangers, friends, or family.

"I think having that confidence that you can defend yourself is really important. I think for the fitness aspect, it is really important to get that heart rate up. And it is important for people to understand the awareness of your surroundings," said Gave, a black belt in tae kwon do with Fit 2 Defend.

Gave began with a lecture on the golden rules of self-defense before working hands-on with various techniques that included punching and kneeing an attacker.

"It was fun and very informative. I'm going to grab my sister and hopefully, take this class over the summer," Alex Lowry of Lake Villa said after learning punches and kicks. "Hopefully, I don't have to use it in the future but, just in case, it never hurts."

The program was sponsored by the CLC Wellness Club, which promotes optimal health and wellness in individuals and communities.
