Chicago public schools to re-open after 19-inch snow
CHICAGO (AP) - Classes for Chicago Public School students will resume a day after schools were closed because of the city's worst snow storm of the winter.
About 19 inches of snow fell on Chicago over the weekend. City officials said Monday it's the fifth-largest snowstorm ever recorded in the city, prompting school officials to order the third weather-related closing this year. The district's nearly 400,000 students had two days off last month due to cold.
Despite the canceled classes, school buildings remained open for students who needed somewhere to go. The buildings were staffed by school administrators, custodians, and building engineers.
Chicago Board of Education Vice President Jesse Ruiz said CPS employees were clearing sidewalks and parking lots at all schools to make sure students and staff can get into buildings.
