Overnight fire in Muncie destroys landmark 2-story business

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - An overnight fire has destroyed a Muncie business that once housed a large retail center but began as a grocery story nearly a century ago.

Muncie Fire Chief Eddie Bell said crews entered Frankie D's Flea Market twice early Sunday to douse the fire but were ordered out about 2:20 a.m. when flames breached the landmark building's roof.

Bell tells The Star Press (http://tspne.ws/1Dk0hiU ) the two-story building was soon fully engulfed in flames and there wasn't much firefighters could do.

An exterior wall of the building later collapsed and officials said explosions heard inside the burning building were believed to be propane tanks stored on the property.

The building opened as a grocery store in 1920 but was expanded substantially over the years into the former Ross Corner store.
