Kennedy Center recruits 1st music composer-in-residence

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is recruiting its first ever composer-in-residence to write music across artistic genres and to curate a new contemporary music series.

The center says composer Mason Bates will begin a three-year residency during the 2015-2016 season. He will also be involved in initiatives to use technology to educate audiences. Plans also call for including local artists and DJs in performances at the Kennedy Center.

Bates currently serves as composer-in-residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra where he has worked to bring classical music to new audiences.

The composer-in-residence position is part of a new effort under Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter to engage artists with audiences more directly. Rutter previously led the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and now is bringing Bates from Chicago to Washington.
