Paramount Theatre movie Mondays to honor Black History Month

During February, Classic Movie Mondays will honor Black History Month with four films at 7 p.m. Mondays at the Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd. in Aurora.

Tickets are $1. Concessions are available. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the movie starting at 7 p.m. Visit paramountaurora.com. It is sponsored by Waubonsee Community College.

On Feb. 2, see the 1997 Steven Spielberg film, "Amistad." Based on a true story, this Academy Award-nominated drama takes place in 1893. After rebelling against their captors, a group of West African men are charged as runaway slaves. Now it's up to a team of tough abolitionist lawyers to fight for their freedom and get them home. It stars Djimon Hounsou, Morgan Freeman, Matthew McConaughey and Anthony Hopkins. The film is rated R.

On Feb. 9, it will be the 2013 Best Picture Academy Award winner "12 Years a Slave." This true story follows the life of Solomon Northup, a free African American man living in 1841 New York with his family. While traveling in Washington D.C., Solomon is kidnapped, sold into slavery and forced to fight for his freedom and survival. The film, directed by Steve McQueen, stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o. The film is rated R.

On Feb. 16, see director Quentin Tarantino's 2012 film "Django Unchained." This spaghetti western became an instant Tarantino classic. A dentist-turned-bounty hunter Dr. Shultz buys a slave named Django out of captivity to become his assistant. In exchange for his help, Shultz promises to help Django find and rescue his wife from the clutches of a brutal plantation owner. It stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio. The film is rated R.

On Feb. 23, it will be director Spike Lee's 1992 film "Malcolm X." This biographical film is based on the life of Malcolm X, one of the most controversial personalities of 20th-century America. Following his life as a gangster, his Black Nationalist leadership and his conversion to Islam, Malcolm X's story educates, inspires and reminds that the power to change the world rests in each and every person. It stars Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett and Delroy Lindo. The film is rated PG-13.
