Girls basketball / Lake County roundup

Point guard Corrina Vaughan scored 16 points, center Katie Rossetti grabbed 19 rebounds, and Wauconda's girls basketball team spoiled Lakes' senior night, winning the North Suburban Prairie Division game 44-40 Friday night.

Wauconda (8-12, 3-8) snapped a four-game losing streak, while Lakes fell to 12-13, 5-5 with its second loss in a row.

"We are not a very good team when we do not share the ball," Lakes coach Pete Schneider said. "We have quarters, halves and whole games where we stand and have no movement, and the outcome is the same. I give all the credit to (coach) Jaime (Dennis) and Wauconda for running an offense and sharing the ball. They played hard and took it to us. We settle for jump shots, and when you are not shooting the ball well, standing around throwing balls at the basket will be the kiss of death."

Lakes shot 5 of 13 from the foul line, while Wauconda was 11 of 18. Lakes led 12-4 lead after one quarter but trailed 22-19 at the half.

Wauconda also received 10 points from Jessie Wood, who had her best game of the year, Dennis said. Wauconda's coach added that she's never had a player with 19 rebounds in a game. Rossetti also scored 8 points. Seventeen of her boards were on the defensive end.

"What a fun and exciting game," Dennis said. "This was a much-needed win. Lakes was all hyped up for senior night and really took it to us in the first (quarter), but we managed to pull it together the rest of the game. I challenged them in between the first and the second to step up and match the speed, strength and intensity of Lakes."

Dennis also praised Hayley Redmann (4 points, 6 rebounds), who "found her aggressive game and made a difference in a lot of plays."

Vernon Hills 66, Round Lake 21: Kasey Firnbach had 17 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists for the Cougars, who celebrated senior night by improving to 17-6 and 6-3 in the North Suburban Prairie.

Mia Polisky added 17 points and 4 rebounds for Vernon Hills. The Cougars honored seniors Firnbach, Polisky, Monica Bahlmann, Katie Brettmann, Kristen Guglielmi, Haley Lieberman and Tori Smith.

Warren 49, Libertyville 31: Freshman Jordynn Hughes poured in 29 points, as the visiting Blue Devils stunned the Wildcats in North Suburban Lake action.

Libertyville (14-8, 6-3) received 11 points apiece from Maggie Piazzi and Becky Deichl.

Lake Zurich 38, Grayslake Central 26: Rachel Dawson and Elly Daleske scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Bears in the nonconference game.

Grayslake North 65, Crystal Lake Central 28: Maggie Fish's 15 points and Brandi Thibeaux's 14 led the Knights to the Fox Valley Fox victory.

Sidney Lovitsch added 10 points for Grayslake North (12-12, 6-4).
