Fremd salutes seniors, secures MSL West tie

Senior night was a big success for Fremd's state-ranked girls basketball team as the Vikings clinched at least a tie for its sixth straight Mid-Suburban League West championship.

Fremd improved to 20-4 and 8-0 with a 58-37 victory over visiting Schaumburg.

Leading the senior contingent was Duke recruit Haley Gorecki with a game-high 20 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals.

Gorecki closed to within 10 points of 2,000 for her career.

Other Fremd seniors honored prior to the game were Emily Bieda, Megan Chernich, Caroline Macius and manager Shay Bender.

Bieda and Chernich also made it into the scoring column.

The four seniors started for Fremd, which fell behind 9-6 lead.

"It was a great opportunity to honor our seniors," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "They have worked very hard to provide leadership for this group.

"This group does a ton of behind the scenes things that don't show up in the box score. They have sacrificed a lot for the better of the team. They are great players and people and we are very proud to have them on our team."

The Vikings pulled away in the third quarter outscoring the Saxons 23-6.

Junior Briana Lewis added 9 points for Fremd while Erin Lenahan (4 steals) and Julia Wacker each had 6 points.

Hersey fired home 10 3-pointers. Kelly Weyhrich handed out 9 assists while Gina Miklasz had 5.

"From the intensity of our bench to clutch shots in the final four minutes, I'm really proud of how our girls responded in a pressure-packed game," Fendley added.
