State senator files bill to honor 7 brothers, WWII vets

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - An Illinois state senator has filed legislation that would name a portion of a central Illinois highway after seven brothers who served in World War II.

Carlinville Sen. Sam McCann's bill would rename Route 67 through Greene County the "Powell Brothers Memorial Highway."

Arthur, Earl, Fred, George and Max Powell served in the Navy. Adrian and Everett Powell served in the Army Air Corps. All seven brothers survived and returned home after the war.

McCann says the family "demonstrated their absolute love and respect for this country" and "deserves to be remembered."

The brothers were commended by the U.S. Senate last year. The family's hometown of Hillview erected a memorial flagpole in their honor in 1988.

___

The bill is SJR8.
