Porter County launching effort to eliminate heroin abuse

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - Porter County authorities have announced plans to better investigate heroin overdoses and share information among law enforcement agencies.

Porter County Sheriff David Reynolds said Tuesday that the initiative will establish protocol for local agencies handling both fatal and non-fatal overdose cases. The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1EpSbcE ) reports investigations will seek to identify, arrest and charge anyone who's responsible for providing illegal drugs that cause death or serious injury.

Reynolds says the goal is to find and eliminate sources of heroin.

The effort will involve local police departments within Porter County, as well as the county prosecutor's office, drug unit and coroner's office. Information from investigations will be analyzed by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, and then shared with the Porter County Drug Task Force.
