Police: Delnor suspect arrested in Indiana

Geneva police said a Campton Hills man suspected of threatening a relative with a knife Tuesday morning at Delnor Hospital was taken into custody Tuesday night in Indiana. Justin B. Patzer, 31, is charged with felony domestic battery, domestic battery and aggravated assault. He was taken into custody by the Hammond Police Department at 8:45 p.m., according to a news release. Watchdogs sue COD board over Breuder severance

Ahead of what's called a procedural revote tonight on a $762,000 buyout package for President Robert Breuder, a group of government watchdogs filed a lawsuit yesterday against the College of DuPage's board of trustees that alleges it violated the Open Meetings Act last week. The college's board last Thursday voted 6-1 to approve the package, in which Breuder will be receiving nearly three times his base salary when he retires on March 31, 2016, about three years earlier than his existing contract's expiration date. Changes at animal control facility raising some concerns

Some current and former DuPage County Animal Care and Control staff members and volunteers are voicing concerns with what they called the termination of the agency's veterinary administrator and the county's perceived lack of a plan to ensure the shelter can operate without him. County officials confirmed last week that Dr. Todd Faraone no longer works there. A county spokesman yesterday declined to discuss the reason for Faraone's departure. Full story.

Spitalli gets 68 years for Darien slaying, kidnapping

A 36-year-old Darien man convicted of nearly beheading his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend will likely never be free again. DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin sentenced Joseph Spitalli Tuesday evening to 68 years in prison for his convictions for first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping. Prosecutors sought a natural life sentence for the murder, followed by 20 years for the kidnapping. Full story.

Motorist finds rifle of Lake County sheriff's sergeant in street

A sergeant with the Lake County sheriff's office is under internal review after a rifle fell off the trunk of his car and was found on a Volo street Sunday by a motorist. Whether the AR15 .223-caliber rifle was loaded or how long it was in the street before being found is part of the investigation, Undersheriff Raymond J. Rose said Tuesday. Full story

Elgin man dies of injuries from Tuesday morning crash

A 66-year-old Elgin man died of injuries sustained in a two-car crash yesterday morning in Elgin, police said. Guillermo Zamora-Enriquez was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle and a passenger in Zamora-Enriquez's car were treated at the hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. Full story.

Two men arrested in Mount Prospect shooting

Mount Prospect police charged two men with recklessly discharging a firearm and aggravated unlawful discharge of a weapon after a report of shots fired about 8:46 p.m. Friday on the 1500 block of Canford Cliffs Road, police said. Full story.

Back in 1958 and '59, baseball stats such as WAR didn't exist. And we really wouldn't have needed them to tell how good Ernie Banks was. He was the MVP of the National League both of those years. Even if that newfangled measuring stick was around back then, it probably wouldn't have mattered much to Ernie. The Bulls and the Golden State Warriors played an overtime instant classic late last night in Oakland, California. Derrick Rose drained a 20-foot jumper with seven seconds left in OT, then record-setting scorer Klay Thompson missed a runner at the buzzer, allowing the Bulls to finish with a memorable 113-111 victory in overtime at Oracle Arena.
