CLC students take break from class to give blood

Students took a break from studies to give blood Wednesday at College of Lake County during a LifeSource blood drive.

LifeSource provides blood products to thousands of patients at area hospitals who need transfusions each year.

"We have LifeSource come on campus four times a year," said Marilyn Sink, administrative assistant for Health Services at CLC. "It teaches students to give back. It is so important because there is a shortage of blood. When you have surgeries or accidents, you never know if something is going to happen to yourself or to someone you know that they may need it."

Almost 100 donors were expected during the drive at the college's Grayslake college, providing an estimated 90 units of blood. Each unit is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets, and can help up to three people apiece.

"I've donated for a long time," said Christian Farrell, 20, of Antioch. "It was really promoted in high school for me. I like to do what I can, and my body is making it so why not give it to someone who can't and needs it."
