Music notes: Uli Jon Roth headlines St. Charles' Arcada

Guitar maestro

Uli Jon Roth thrilled rock fans, especially those with a particular fondness for the electric guitar, during his innovative stints with hard-rock bands like the Scorpions and Electric Sun. He's also had a successful solo career in which he's added classical elements to the rock-guitar sound. (He invented the “Sky Guitar,” which allows him to create a more varied sonic palette with the instrument.) Roth will be joined by other guitar heavyweights, including ex-UFO guitarist Vinnie Moore, during two shows in the Chicago area this weekend. Uli Jon Roth performs at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles, and 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, at Reggie's, 2105 S. State St., Chicago. Tickets start at $22 for the St. Charles show and $25 for the Chicago one. Go to oshows.com or reggieslive.com.

Time to jam

Popular jam/cover band Mr. Blotto makes a stop in the suburbs this weekend. The band has cultivated a devoted following throughout the Midwest for its high-energy live performances of rock and jam-band classics along with some original tunes. 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. $10. Go to durtynellies.com.

Never too early ...

True, we haven't even cracked February yet, but it's not too early to think about the Pitchfork Music Festival, which will take place July 17-19 at Union Park in Chicago. The indie-centric fest is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and three-day passes have just gone on sale. The lineup will be announced next month, but previous years have included an array of established indie/alternative acts and the latest up-and-comers. Beck, the Breeders, Killer Mike, Twin Peaks, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Superchunk and Public Enemy are among those who have performed. Three-day passes always go fast, so don't wait! The Pitchfork Music Festival will take place July 17-19 at Union Park, 1501 W. Randolph, Chicago. Three-day passes cost $150 and single-day passes cost $65. Go to pitchforkmusicfestival.com.
