Jeffersonville port set record for cargo shipments in 2014

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Indiana's Ohio River port in Jeffersonville handled a record 2.4 million tons of cargo in 2014 thanks to record-high volumes of grain, steel and salt.

Last year was the first time the port just north of Louisville, Kentucky, shipped at least 2 million tons of cargo in one year. The 2014 cargo volume eclipsed the previous record set in 2006 by more than 464,000 tons.

Ports of Indiana CEO Rich Cooper says the port's record cargo was driven by record shipments of grain, steel and salt. He says the port allows companies to "reach world markets from the Midwest."

The Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville opened in 1985, becoming Indiana's second on the Ohio River. The first was the Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon, which opened in 1976 in far southwestern Indiana.
