Algeria beats Senegal 2-0 to make African Cup quarterfinals
MALABO, Equatorial Guinea (AP) - Algeria scored early and late Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over Senegal.
Riyad Karim Mahrez gave the top-ranked team in Africa the lead in the 11th minute and Nabil Bentaleb added the other in the 82nd.
The win gave Algeria six points in Group C and a spot in Sunday's quarterfinals.
Ghana won the group by beating South Africa 2-1 in the other match in Mongomo.
Mahrez found space behind the defense and collected a long free kick from Madjid Bougherra before beating Senegal goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul to give Algeria the early lead.
Bentaleb received a pass from Sofiane Feghouli toward the end of the match, controlled it quickly and drove the ball into the net.
