Time may be running out for Sycamore's penny parking meters

SYCAMORE, Ill. (AP) - Sycamore's penny parking meters may be running out of time because the city is running out of timers to fix them.

Sycamore is one of the few communities in the country still using penny parking meters. Officials say the decades-old meters require timers from a company that no longer makes them.

The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle (http://bit.ly/1JWWbzI ) reports that a December story from The Associated Press about Sycamore's parking meters prompted calls from New Jersey, Ohio, Texas and Arizona with offers of surplus materials. But Sycamore officials say the callers don't have the thing they really need: timers.

Sycamore officials hope somebody has timers that fit the more than 300 meters that still operate. But Mayor Ken Mundy says the future for the penny parking meters is not a bright one.
