Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel debates challengers

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is criticizing two of his re-election challengers over a controversial parking meter deal and a decades-old property tax hike.

All five candidates in the Feb. 24 mayoral contest faced off Tuesday during a live-streamed Chicago Tribune editorial board session.

Emanuel criticized Alderman Bob Fioretti, including for his votes supporting former Mayor Richard Daley's 2008 deal to privatize the city's parking meters.

Fioretti says he was kept in the dark about the terms at the time.

Emanuel won office in 2011. He touted his administration's 2013 efforts to renegotiate new provisions of that agreement.

Emanuel also questioned Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia for supporting a 1980s property tax increase while he was an alderman. Garcia says the money was needed during a fiscal crisis.
