Wheeling Jazz Bands Pick Up Top Honors At Festival

On Saturday, Jan. 24, three jazz bands from the Wheeling High School band program picked up a number of top awards from the Northshore Jazz Festival.

Wheeling's Jazz Band 2, directed by John Teichert, earned a Division I rating and Second Place in Class.

The Jazz Combo earned a Division I Rating and took home the First Place award. Three students won best soloists awards, Paul Wagner, a junior on saxophone, Anthony Gonzalez, a junior on trombone and Eugene Yakubovich, a senior on saxophone.

Yakubovich was also awarded best soloist of the day and a scholarship to the Birch Creek Summer Jazz Camp.

The Wheeling High School Jazz Band 1, directed by Brian Logan, earned a Division I Rating, First Place in Class AA, and the Grand Champion Award as the best jazz band of the day.

This is Wheeling's fifth Grand Champion Award at the Northshore Jazz Festival. The festival, hosted by Glenbrook South High School, included over 70 bands.
