Wake, UNC schedule 2-game nonconference football series

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Atlantic Coast Conference members Wake Forest and North Carolina will play a two-game nonconference series.

The schools on Monday said they will play in Winston-Salem in 2019 and in Chapel Hill in 2021.

It marks the first time members of the same major conference will play each other in games that won't count in the league standings.

The schools are in opposite divisions of the ACC and don't play regularly, having met only four times since the divisional split in 2004. Their next ACC meetings are in 2015 in Chapel Hill and in 2022 in Winston-Salem.

North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham calls it a "unique opportunity to play a regional rival." Wake Forest AD Ron Wellman says it "made perfect sense to continue the rivalry."
