LA Galaxy re-sign midfielder Rafael Garcia as camp opens

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Midfielder Rafael Garcia has re-signed with the LA Galaxy.

The defending MLS champions announced the deal Monday after opening their first full week of training camp.

Garcia spent the past three seasons with the Galaxy, who drafted him in 2012. He has made 11 appearances for the club, starting one game.

Garcia was the captain of the affiliate LA Galaxy II last season, scoring four goals in 23 games. The Southern California native played at Cal State Northridge.

The Galaxy have opportunities for playing time in midfield with the retirement of Landon Donovan and the trade of Marcelo Sarvas to Colorado. Steven Gerrard won't join the team until July.

Former Galaxy goal-scorer Edson Buddle is among the non-roster players competing for a roster spot in training camp.
