Macy's to relocate WWII plaque at Detroit-area location

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) - A department store plans to relocate a large plaque honoring World War II veterans when it moves out of a suburban Detroit shopping mall.

Macy's spokeswoman Andrea Schwartz tells the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/1ykg399 ) that the plaque will be on public display at another Detroit-area location when the store closes at Northland Center mall.

Schwartz says the company hasn't decided which of the eight stores it will go to but says the memorial is leaving the Southfield site with Macy's.

J. L. Hudson Co. erected the plaque in September 1947 at its downtown Detroit flagship store to honor about 1,150 employees who served during World War II. The store closed in 1983.

The marker spent a decade in storage before store officials moved it to the Northland Center.

In a Jan. 22, 2015 photo, Andre Bradley, 25, of Detroit walks past a large wall mounted plaque with 1,146 names that commemorates employees of the J.L. Hudson Co. who served in World War II. He spotted the names of two veterans who share his last name. The plaque was originally place in the Hudson's flagship department store in downtown Detroit, but was moved to Northland Center Mall in Southfield after the store closed in 1983. The plaque is now outside the Macy's store within Northland Center mall. The plaque will be relocated to another Detroit area Macy's once the Northland Macy's closes this spring.
