Usually a scene like this has my eye bouncing all over the place, but as I watched the moon rise (that big yellow half-dot in the middle) looking eastbound on Chicago Ave. in Elgin on January 9th, it reminded me of something out of a sci-fi movie.   During the coldest day of the year, so far, I took about 18 photographs of individual snowflakes using my iPhone with an olloclip 21x macro lens attached. It was my first attempt at photographing the tiny symmetrical beauties of winter with any camera. I decided the red and black fibers of an old plaid polyester fleece blanket I had would work perfect as a landing zone for the hexagonal structures in my Glenview backyard. I froze the blanket by setting it outside wrapped in a plastic trash bag to stay dry, knowing I would need a few seconds to focus on the remarkably complex frozen structures, and they would melt fast landing on the blanket that was at 70ºF.
