Cab drivers raise money for Chicago shooting victim's family

CHICAGO (AP) - A labor union is calling for reforms to better protect cab drivers after a driver was shot and killed in a robbery in Chicago.

In a news release Friday, Cab Drivers United and AFSCME Council 31 say they're planning to conduct safety training for drivers next month.

Authorities say 51-year-old Chinedu Madu died after he was shot in the chest Jan. 8. A 23-year-old man, Tyrese Bell of Chicago, has been charged in Madu's death.

On Thursday, cab drivers held memorials for Madu at Chicago's O'Hare and Midway international airports. They also raised more than $3,000 for Madu's wife and young son.

David Adenakan is a cab driver. He says drivers provide a vital service to people in Chicago, but are also "prime targets for violent crime."
