Nancy Writebol to speak about Ebola crisis this weekend

Ebola survivor and missionary Nancy Writebol with her husband, David, will share their riveting story during the dark days at ELWA Hospital in Liberia. "Serving at ELWA Hospital at the height of the Ebola crisis was worth the risk," Nancy Writebol said.

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa was an international news story that was barely covered in the U.S. until two American missionaries, Dr. Kent Brantley and Nancy Writebol, working at ELWA hospital near Monrovia, Liberia, contracted the disease in July of 2014. Both were flown to the United States for treatment and both survived a virus that was killing more than 70 percent of its victims in the early months of the outbreak. The national attention they received prompted governments, health officials and charitable organizations to get involved. This interaction dramatically helped to curb the rate of infection.

What causes someone to run into a crisis instead of away from one? Why does someone put themselves directly in harm's way to serve someone else? Is it really worth the risk?

Nancy Writebol and husband David will be telling their story at Wheaton College and two local churches on Saturday, Jan. 24 and Sunday, Jan. 25. All events are free and open to the public.
