South Carolina OL Shell to miss spring after surgery

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina starting offensive lineman Brandon Shell will miss spring practice after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

Shell played right tackle and started every game for the Gamecocks (7-6). He had surgery earlier this month, according to athletic spokesman Steve Fink. Shell is expected to be back in time for summer workouts and the season.

Shell is a 6-foot-6, 333-pound junior who had the chance to jump to the NFL, yet chose to finish his senior season at South Carolina. He has started 36 of the past 39 games, including every contest the past two seasons.

Shell, of Goose Creek, is the great nephew of NFL Hall of Famer Art Shell.
