Audit says Ankeny college cashier took thousands of dollars

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - State auditors say an Ankeny community college cafeteria cashier improperly voided nearly $26,000 in transactions over a period of 16 months and much of the money was deposited into her bank account.

State Auditor Mary Mosiman says in a report released Friday auditors found more than 600 improperly voided transactions by Dawn VanFleet, a former cashier at the Des Moines Area Community College.

The auditors say transactions occurred from January 2013 and May 2014 and found numerous corresponding cash deposits into VanFleet's bank account.

VanFleet, who is 45, pleaded guilty to second-degree theft in December and is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 4.

The college has since changed its cash register procedures as recommended by the auditors that prohibit voided transactions and require refunds to be approved by a supervisor.
