Mexican restaurant opening in Randhurst Village in March

A new Mexican restaurant is moving into Randhurst Village, next to the AMC theaters.

On Tuesday, the Mount Prospect village board approved a liquor license for Truco, a taqueria and margarita bar at 211 Randhurst Village Drive. The target date for opening is sometime in March.

Acting Village Manager David Strahl said the village met with the owners, who gave an impressive presentation that demonstrated their knowledge of the restaurant business.

The owners currently operate several restaurants in the area.

"They are modifying their menu a little bit to take advantage of a niche that they feel is important to Mount Prospect and to take advantage of their location next to the theater," he said.

Carrie Nahlawi, a member of the management team, told the board her management group created Fuego Mexican Grill in downtown Arlington Heights. The group runs Mago Grill and Cantina in downtown Arlington Heights, as well as locations in South Barrington and Bolingbrook.

"We are very excited to bring a little bit of a different concept to Mount Prospect," she said. She mentioned that she lives in the area and enjoys visiting Randhurst.

Juan Luis Gonzalez, the executive chef whom Nahlawi described as a family friend going back to the 1980s, described the menu as Mexican street food.

He said the restaurant will offer "unique appetizers," including fare that not only reflects Mexico City but also other areas of the country, including seafood tacos with shrimp pesto, and tlayudas - a thin, crunchy Mexican flatbread he will cover with such ingredients as braised short rib, shrimp and mushrooms.

"We buy nothing in cans," he said. "Everything that we produce on the menu is fresh. We try to buy from local produce and meat companies in our restaurants that we currently have."
