Former Devils owner to coach high school football

SOMERVILLE, N.J. (AP) - The former owner of the New Jersey Devils hockey team has traded the ice for the gridiron.

Jeff Vanderbeek has been approved as a co-head football coach at central New Jersey's Somerville High School. He'll be paid $1 a year to be on the sidelines with coach Chris Casamento during the 2015 season.

Somerville has the state's second-longest losing streak of 22 games.

Vanderbeek tells the Courier News of Bridgewater he loves coaching and his father suggested years ago that he give back to youth and community.

But resident Greg Pierson told the school board that having co-coaches is a recipe for disaster.

Vanderbeek was a back at Bridgewater-Raritan East High School and William and Mary College.
