Woodridge man charged with rape, robbery of 80-year-old Westmont woman

A 21-year-old Woodridge man is being held on $5 million bail accused of the New Year's Day rape and robbery of an elderly Westmont woman.

Prosecutors say Tevin Rainey, who has no known permanent address, forced his way into the apartment of an 80-year-old woman at 5 a.m. Jan. 1, sexually assaulted her in her bed and demanded money.

When the woman told Rainey she didn't have much money in the home, prosecutors said Rainey forced her at gunpoint to drive to an ATM and withdraw money.

After withdrawing funds from her savings and checking accounts and giving the money to Rainey, the man ordered the victim to drive to a nearby apartment complex where he exited the vehicle and walked away, authorities said.

After returning home and calling 911, the woman was treated for her injuries at a nearby hospital.

The criminal investigation eventually led to Rainey, who was by that time already in custody in DuPage County jail.

Rainey is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, armed robbery, home invasion and aggravated kidnapping,

"(Rainey's) actions in this case are extremely disturbing," said DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin in a prepared statement. "Allegations of sexual assault, robbery and kidnapping will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force of the law."

Rainey is due in court next at 9 a.m. on Feb. 10.

According to court records, Rainey was stopped by Woodridge police on Jan. 2 and cited for illegal transportation of alcohol. He gave an alias at that time, authorities said, leading to him being charged with obstruction of justice and arrested on an outstanding warrant from Will County.
