Got an idea for a new Victory Auto Wreckers ad?

Do you think you can produce a better TV commercial than the one that made Victory Auto Wreckers a household name?

The Bensenville company is holding a YouTube contest to see if amateur directors can improve on the commercial that has enjoyed a 30-year run on Chicago airwaves.

"They could re-create the commercial in a new, novel way," said Jesse Padilla, Victory's marketing director. "They could even take it a completely different way."

First aired in May 1985, Victory's commercial shows a man opening a door that promptly falls off his battered car. The ad has been so effective, Victory has seen no need to replace it.

Still, the commercial has its critics.

"Over the course of 30 years, I can't tell you how many times I've had people tell me, 'Please change your commercial. I'm so sick of that commercial,'" said Kyle Weisner, Victory's owner.

"In honor of the 30th anniversary of the commercial," he said, "we're giving our detractors an opportunity to make whatever they want."

As part of the contest, a winning commercial will be chosen once a week from Feb. 1 through March 28. Each weekly winner will receive $500.

"If you ever wanted to change the commercial, here's your chance," Padilla said. "You'll maybe get $500 for doing it."

Entrants must limit their commercial to a maximum of two minutes. They then need to upload it to their YouTube channel and send the link to victoryautowreckers.com/commercial.

Entrants must be at least 18 and allow Victory full use of the video entry for commercial purposes.

"Chicago is a pool of creative people," Padilla said. "We want to see what they can produce."
