Des Plaines History Center Book Group to discuss WWII bombers

In honor of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, residents are invited to pick up a copy of "The Arsenal of Democracy" and join a book discussion from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson St.

A.J. Baime's dramatic and detailed page-turner outlines how the Ford Motor Company shifted from assembling cars to producing airplanes to supply the Allied war effort.

The book jacket states: "The Arsenal of Democracy tells the incredible story of how Detroit answered the call, centering on Henry Ford and his tortured son, Edsel, who, when asked if they could deliver 50,000 airplanes, made an outrageous claim: Ford Motor Company would erect a plant that could yield a 'bomber an hour.'"

The well-researched book, whose title stems from a phrase President Franklin Delano Roosevelt coined during one of his radio addresses, includes an epic cast of characters and brings a captivating part of history to life.

"I am very happy that this book came out recently," said Philip Mohr, book discussion facilitator. "It is an extremely engaging account of how industry and the tycoons who ran it stepped up for the war effort."

Pick up a copy of the book on the third floor of the Des Plaines Public Library and join the book discussion group for an informal and educational discussion. Book discussion groups meet every other month. Call the History Center at (847) 391-5399 to register. This event is co-sponsored by the History Center and the Des Plaines Public Library.

The Des Plaines History Center gratefully acknowledges operating support from the City of Des Plaines, the Des Plaines Park District, its members, and other contributors.
