Winter weekend events being held at Adirondack great camp

NEWCOMB, N.Y. (AP) - The popular winter weekends at a historic Adirondack great camp are being held again this winter.

The first event took place Martin Luther King Day. More are planned for President's Day weekend in February, and the weekend of March 14 and 15.

This is the third year the Department of Environmental Conservation is holding the events. Participants cross-country ski or snowshoe to the camp properties in the Essex County town of Newcomb. There, they can see interpretive displays and tour the buildings with Adirondack Architectural Heritage staff.

The trip is nearly 10 miles round trip.

Construction of Camp Santanoni began in 1892 by Robert and Anna Pruyn. It eventually consisted of more than four dozen buildings on 12,900 acres including a working farm, the Gate Lodge complex, and a huge rustic Main Lodge on Newcomb Lake.
