Michigan hires Wheatley as running backs coach

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Tyrone Wheatley is Michigan's new running backs coach.

The school formally announced Wheatley's hiring Saturday. He returns to the school where he was a standout running back and track star. He rushed for 1,357 yards as a sophomore in 1992, and he now ranks fifth on Michigan's career rushing list.

Wheatley coached running backs for the Buffalo Bills from 2013-14. Before that, he coached running backs at Syracuse, Eastern Michigan and Ohio Northern. He was also the recruiting coordinator at EMU.

Wheatley says Michigan holds a special place in his heart, and he thanked new coach Jim Harbaugh for this opportunity.
