Padres agree to deals with ace Ross and 6 other players

SAN DIEGO (AP) - All-Star right-hander Tyson Ross is receiving a hefty raise for the 2015 season, agreeing Friday to a $5.25 million contract as one of seven players to avoid arbitration.

The 6-foot-5 Ross made $1.98 million last season before winning a career-best 13 games with a 2.81 ERA in 31 starts. The 27-year-old struck out a career-best 195 and made the National League All-Star team for the first time.

Infielder-outfielder Alexi Amarista reached a $2.5 million, two-year contract with the Padres. The deal includes a $1.1 million salary for this season, $1.3 million for 2016 and a $100,000 signing bonus.

Also Friday, the new-look Padres agreed to contracts with newly acquired reliever Shawn Kelley for $2,835,000, infielder Yonder Alonso ($1.65 million) and pitchers Ian Kennedy ($9.85 million), Andrew Cashner ($4.05 million) and Dale Thayer ($1,375,000).

Kelley, a right-handed setup man, came over from the New York Yankees in a trade last month. He went 3-6 with four saves and a 4.53 ERA in 59 relief appearances in 2014.
