Family donates $2 million for CSO timpani position

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has received a $2 million donation to support its timpani player.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association announced the gift from Bruce and Martha Clinton and The Clinton Family Fund on Thursday. It'll go toward endowing the principal timpani position at the orchestra, which is currently held by David Herbert.

The Chicago-born Bruce Clinton says he has a passion for classical music and once "fantasized about becoming a professional timpanist." In 2013, a donation from the Clintons helped purchase a set of new timpani.

Herbert says he's "overwhelmed with gratitude" for the Clintons' generosity.

Bruce Clinton is the retired CEO of The Clinton Company, a property management firm. He's been on the board of trustees of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association since 2008.
